MuniNet has long maintained that increasing government accountability is among the many benefits of a quality municipal web site. In its November 2005 issue, Government Technology magazine features an article showcasing two municipalities that publish city council members’ expense reports on their respective web sites – a practice that can’t help but hold elected officials accountable to their constituents. The article, entitled “Window on Spending,” highlights how Fort Collins, Colorado post monthly expenditures as a way of promoting transparency – and accountability – in local government.
